The Gaze

Before taking this picture, I planned to catch a student who is deep in thought. I planned to catch them by surprise and not tell them when the picture was being taken. However, this did not work out because they saw me there before I could take the picture. Therefore the individual in the picture was instructed to pose. I chose to use natural light because the individual was sitting right beside a window. A challenge that I encountered was other people walking into the vicinity of where I was taking the photo. I solved this problem by cropping the photo. I felt that cropping the photo was the best choice because it allows the viewer to focus on the individual's facial expression. Also, I heightened the contrast in order to create tension.
When I look at this photograph I get the impression that the subject is stressed or thinking about something important. With the hand over his mouth, the individual looks even more stressed.
